I've had a pretty quite book week (especially compared to last week's epicness) and I've only received two great books, BEING NIKKI by Meg Cabot (haven't even read Airhead yet, but I'm planning to) and THE TASTE OF SORROW by Jude Morgan, which is a story about the Brontë sisters (many thanks to the lovely people at Headline)!

Cover Win / Fail #2
It's time for another Cover Win/Fail feature! I have so many of these lined up, but I'm planning to take it slowly, maybe one every week or every two weeks. If you're not familiar with this feature, it's basically just where I spotlight two covers - one that I love and one that I don't love all that much. As always, I mean no offence, I'm just expressing my humble personal opinion and you're more than welcome to disagree. :)
On to this week's picks!
On to this week's picks!

Cover WIN: Living la Vida Loca by Belinda Jones
I absolutely *adore* this cover! The book's not out yet and I have to admit I'm not too blown away by the plot summary, but gosh the cover is just breathtaking! Gorgeous illustration, wonderful colours, pretty text, simply amazing! I can tell that someone put a lot effort into designing this cover and it really paid off! I have such a strong urge to own this book and just stare at it, even if I never read it, lol.
Cover FAIL: The Sweetheart of Prosper County by Jill S. Alexander
Cover FAIL: The Sweetheart of Prosper County by Jill S. Alexander
I still remember how this cover had me raising my eyebrows the first time I saw it months ago when someone reviewed the book and it stayed on my mind ever since, heh. Sadly I found the cover so off-putting that it took me ages to even bother finding out why there's a cock on the cover and now I know that this book (which doesn't even sound that bad) features a prize-winning rooster - well, the cover may thus be fitting, but *I* still think it's not the best choice for the cover image. I know I'd never pick it up in a book shop, let alone spend money on it, but that's just silly ol' me.
What do you think about these two covers? Alternative opinions are always welcome!

'Till next time, darlings. ;)
ps: It's Friday so you know what that means - time for another Book Blogger Hop, hosted by Crazy for Books! Don't forget to visit her site and participate in The Hop, it's a fun way to find great new book blogs! :)

Waiting On Wednesday: Two fab August chick lit releases!
This week I'm all excited about two lovely chick lit novels - both released on 5th August!
I looove Alexandra Potter's books, but I have to admit that this cover is not really my favourite, too green & blue (two of my least favourite colours). Loving the sound of the book though!
I haven't read anything by Claudia Carroll yet, but her next book sounds great so I think I'll start with that one!

What if you found your soulmate ... and then discovered you couldn’t lose him?
When Lucy meets Nate aged 18, it is love at first sight. As far as she’s concerned, he’s The One. Caught up in the whirlwind of first love, they kiss under the Bridge of Sighs in Venice at sunset and – according to the legend – are tied together indefinitely.
But ten years later, they’ve almost forgotten about each other. That is, until fate starts to bring them together. Again. And again. And again. It doesn’t seem as wonderful as it had before, but if Nate’s not The One – then why on earth is it proving so hard to break up with him?
A funny and magical romantic comedy about what happens when every girl’s dream of finding her dream man comes very true indeed...

excellent debut novel LIFE SWAP!
Jenna may hail from the ’burbs of New Jersey, but Green Teen activism is her life, so she leaps at the chance to visit her hippie godmother, Susie, up in rural Canada. Jenna is psyched at the chance to commune with nature for the first time — and the cute, plaidwearing boys she’s certain must roam there.I've read & loved both previous books by Abby McDonald (Life Swap/Sophmore Switch & The Popularity Rules) so I really couldn't wait to get my hands on her latest YA work and surely enough, it didn't disappoint! Abby McDonald delivers again - honestly, she writes just the kind of either YA or adult books I *love* to read!
But after a few run-ins with local wildlife (from a grouchy old moose, to Susie’s sullen Goth stepdaughter, to a hot but hostile boy named Reeve), Jenna gets the idea that her long-held ideals, like vegetarianism and conservation, don’t play so well with this population of real outdoorsmen. A dusty survival guide offers Jenna amusing tips on navigating the wilderness — but can she learn to navigate the turns of her heart?
This is the story of Jenna, who's 17 and very passionate about the environment, but her family is falling apart. Her parents are spending the summer apart and she suspects they're on the brink of divorce so in order to avoid the drama, Jenna decides to spend her summer with her godmother Susie in Stillwater, Canada. It takes Jenna a while to adapt to the wilderness, but she's determined to become friends with the local boys (Ethan, Grady & Reeve) and not let the bitchy Fiona, Susie's step-daughter, get her down. Her persistance pays off and she indeed spends a glorious summer in Canada. She goes kayaking, climbing, hiking, swimming, cycling, she falls in love properly for the first time, she encounters a moose and a bear and all that while trying to save Susie's bed and breakfast and keep her romance a secret.
Without all the distractions and limitations of the city life, Jenna lears a lot about herself and also has to reconsider everything she's so passionately fought for. She learns that things aren't as simple as she thought and she learns to put things into perspective, but everything she's been through during the summer, she learns she's now tough enough to face the music and deal with what she's been avoiding.
What's not to love about this book? The plot is quite original and far from boring and flows nicely, just like the writing. The novel features an idyllic but a crucial summer of self-discovery, it deals with friendships, broken families, homosexuality, romance, environmental issues, growing up and so much more. It's hilarious and awwwtastic and serious and empowering at the same time. The characters are very well portrayed and great to read about. Everything just works so well together and it's all so fitting - the setting, the plot, the characters, the dialogue and even the lovely cover, which is like the cherry on top.
I'm not saying that I was completely blown away by this book, but I thought it was a fantastic coming of age story that especially teenagers will easily relate to; it was a simple, quick and very enjoyable read, but it was also meaningful and just oh so lovely - it would make a great film actually! Just like the previous two books by Abby McDonald, I thoroughly enjoyed this one too and I cannot wait for more by this author - next up is her adult novel The Liberation of Alice Love (out in July) and then the rumour has it that she's already finished her next YA novel called The Anti-Prom, which comes out in 2011!

I've had an amaaaaazing awesome fantastic etc book week - check it out!
Yeah, I knoooow, I start happydancing just looking at that, but now let me break it down for you a little.
TRADED
The person responsible for making me The Happiest Girl on the Planet (that's how I felt when opened this package) is the amazing KRISTI from The Story Siren, who is also the host of IMM every week! So you must be thinking, "Giiirl, what did you trade *this* for, a million dollars or something?!" Surprisingly, no, just for a couple of random books! Here's what happened: Kristi had an extra copy of The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May and June by Robin Benway (which I've been DYING to read since Audrey, Wait! was amazing) and so I asked her if she'd be willing to trade it for pretty much anything (I offered my soul/kidney/family), but the silly girl just mentioned a couple of books she liked, ha! So not only did she send me April, May & June (!!!), but she also included her ARC of The Girl with Mermaid Hair by Delia Ephron (which I've also been wanting to read) and a whooole bunch of amazing swag and a lovely handwritten card! No, seriously, how awesome is this?! I know, I know, I'm still squeeeeeeing! It was incredibly nice of Kristi to do something like this and I feel like I've won the book jackpot! :D So for the hundreth time, THANK YOU SO MUCH, KRISTI!

BOUGHT
KATY CARTER WANTS A HERO by Ruth Saberton - This sounds great, pre-ordered it months ago and it finally arrived!
THE CALIFORNIA CLUB by Belinda Jones - I've never read anything by this author and apparently that's almost a crime if you're a chicklit fan so I thought I'd buy one of her books to see what the fuss is about and if she's really as great as she's rumoured to be! ;)
THE TRUE NAOMI STORY by A. M. Goldsher - I bought this one last weekend when I was in Sardinia. I was already holding three (overpriced) books in my hands, but I resisted the other two (for the time being, will deffo order them asap) and just bought this because it sounded cute.
THE NOT-SO-SECRET DIARY OF A CITY GIRL by Allie Spencer - Another goooorgeous Little Black Dress Book, yay!
THE DEBUTANTE by Kathleen Tessaro - I came across this book a few weeks ago and pre-ordered it immediately as it sounds absolutely fantastic, I'm really intrigued by the premise!
THE FOOL'S GIRL by Celia Rees - I loved Witch Child and Sorceress by this author so I couldn't resist her newest work, I've heard great things about it!
DREAMING OF AMELIA by Jaclyn Moriarty - Pre-ordered this one a while ago as I thought the plot sounded quite intriguing!
A HOLLYWOOD ENDING by Robyn Sisman - I fell in love with the hardback cover (the paperback one is horrible, ew) and I just had to have this book, it sounds so cute!

Review: THE OVERNIGHT SOCIALITE by Bridie Clark ***

In this beguiling retelling of the classic Pygmalion, we meet Lucy Ellis, a Manhattan transplant who dreams of making it as a fashion designer but instead toils away on a Garment District assembly line.I absolutely loved the author's debut novel BECAUSE SHE CAN (The Devil Wears Prada set in the world of publishing) and I was thrilled to learn that she had a new book coming out. I pre-ordered it immediately and I finally got to read it during my short trip last weekend. The novel is said to be a modern retelling of PYGMALION (which I also really, really enjoyed) and my expectations for it were quite high, but sadly I was slightly disappointed ...
Road-blocked each time she tries to score a break, Lucy is beginning to think the unthinkable: maybe it's time to pack it in and move home to Minnesota. Then, during a torrential downpour, at her most bedraggled and disheartened, Lucy meets Wyatt Hayes IV.
Wyatt--man-about-town and bored Ph.D. anthropologist--has just been publicly dissed by New York's reigning socialite, Cornelia Rockman, whom he'd been dating. When he meets Lucy, he boasts to his best friend Trip that he can transform any woman, even a trailer-born nobody like Lucy into this year's "It" girl.
She'll make the rest of the pack look like dim little tea lights. If Wyatt can fool the East Coast aristocracy into thinking Lucy's the real deal, he can reveal the farce behind of Cornelia's social superiority complex and score a career-boosting book deal.
Headstrong Lucy challenges her teacher at every turn, but armed with a made-up pedigree and a wardrobe costlier than most studio apartments, she's soon navigating a world in which the most photographed socialite takes all. Can Lucy survive in a wilderness where no girl wears the same gown twice, the Astors are considered Johnny-come-latelies, and weddings are more lavish than the coronation of Louis XIV? Will she forge the connections needed to make a name for herself in fashion? And can she surmount the schemes and suspicions of her newfound rival, Cornelia?
Three months of rigorous prep and test runs culminate in Lucy's showdown at the Fashion Forum Gala, where she and Wyatt confront the ne plus ultra of society and their unexpected feelings for each other. But the gaps between them as well as Wyatt's secret agenda may make this improbable couple an impossibility.
Set against the gold-plated world of Manhattan's social elite, The Overnight Socialite puts a witty twenty-first-century spin on a timeless story of transformation and unlikely love.
Somehow it all just fell flat for me, although the beginning was quite promising. I really felt sorry for Lucy as her whole world came crashing down in one single evening and I thought the scene when she first met Wyatt was quite funny and made everything sound so promising. I love a good makeover story, but this one was hardly exciting - I felt like everything was just briefly mentioned and Lucy's life changed too quickly whereas I would've preferred a more detailed description of the makeover. On the other hand, I thought there were too many characters and side stories that I could do without. On the whole, the plot was just too simple and I found the twists to be slightly predictable and the ending was just cheesy.
Sadly I couldn't connect with the characters either. Lucy should be someone I should love as a characters, but she just didn't jump off the page for me and I felt like I didn't get to know her enough. Maybe it was because I couldn't get into her mind due to the third person narration? Either way, I was surprised to be left quite indifferent to her, I didn't expect that to happen. The other characters seemed rather one dimensional to me too, especially Cornelia and Wyatt as far as main characters go. I felt that generally the characters were assigned a role and they played along, there were no surprises, which is quite a contrast to the original play of Pygmalion where the characters (namely Eliza and Professor Higgins) were a delight!
What I enjoyed about the novel though was the writing itself, which I thought was lovely and made the book easy to read. I have to say I was expecting another comedy by Ms Clark, but this book was more of a satire of the excess and the glamorous lives of the Manhattan elite, which I enjoyed reading about, even though I find it hard to believe that some people actually live like that, heh?!
All in all, the book was a nice, average read - it made me chuckle a few
times, but on the other hand it also made me roll my eyes a couple of times. It wasn't a bad book, far from it, just not as great as I had hoped or expected it to be based on the author's debut BECAUSE SHE CAN, which I strongly recommend! This book is also a spin off of PYGMALION, but it has nothing on the original - it's okay, but it lacks the spark, the humour, the characterization of Shaw's work, which you definitely should read if you haven't already, it's brilliant and oh so funny! You can read it online for free or even watch the lovely film based on the play (it's just one of the many variations). The final judgement - the book is worth reading, but I'd wait for the paperback. Until then, entertain yourself with BECAUSE SHE CAN or PYGMALION. :)

Waiting On Wednesday: LAST NIGHT AT CHATEAU MARMONT
I got back from Sardinia a couple of days ago (ooh, it was lovely), but I've been so busy with real life ever since that I've hardly had time to be online! I feel completely out of the loop and I really must catch up this weekend!
Anyway, this week I'm waiting on Lauren Weisberger's next book and I've been waiting to post about it ever since I first heard about it ages ago, but I was just waiting for the cover to be released, which it was a few days ago. I don't find the cover particularly mindblowing (I mean, it's alright), but I looove the sound of the book and cannot wait to read it - it's out in paperback (yay!) in May in the US and in June in the UK!
ps: This is your last chance to win one out of five copies of DAUGHTERS OF FORTUNE by Tara Hyland - the giveaway ends April 1st! !

Two college sweethearts are living a happy, rather ordinary life in New York but there's a slight twist – she's the breadwinner, supporting her musician boyfriend. Until the tables are turned when he's discovered by a Sony exec and their worlds are turned upside down.
Soon they are holidaying in the Hamptons, adorning the cover of Vanity Fair and attending every glitzy party in town – all the while his career is reaching new, dizzying heights. But the trappings of this elite lifestyle mean our heroine must face the wrath of the US press. Scorned for having a less-than-perfectly-honed LA body and brutalised for being 'ordinary' things couldn't get any worse…
Then news erupts that her best friend, who's been her confidante through these months of misery, has sold her innermost secrets to the press and her life spirals out of control.
She finds solace in a secret support group: The Civilian Ex-Wives and Girlfriends of Celebrities Group – a place to gossip, lubricated with lashings of shared experiences and strong cocktails. As this sassy group right the wrongs of their past relationships, our heroine must decide if she's going to sink or swim.
